The link between diet and gut continues to become more interesting. A recent trial came out that showed that when our gut sees meat and eggs, it produces a substance called TMAO. TMAO has been directly associated with building plaque in the blood vessels and increasing cardiac events. We also know that a high fat diet triggers production of lipopolysaccride which is a sign of an unhappy gut. High levels have been associated with diabetes, Alzheimer disease and autism. Noncaloric artificial sweeteners have also recently been linked to increased risk of diabetes also through alterations in the gut flora. There are many other links being established daily between the diet, changes in the gut and subsequent activation of inflammation.
